TO climax the 60th Anniversary of the founding of Ada Senior High School, some 11 top personalities, who played significant roles in the advancement of education in the life of the school, were duly recognised at the school’s grand Speech-and-Prize-Giving Day which was held on Saturday, November 20th, 2021.

One of such high-profile personalities is Miss Eleanor Louise Webb, a Canadian former tutor of the school, who has, since 2015, established a scholarship scheme for brilliant-but-needy female students of the school.

The citation, which went with the award read: “YOU ARE HIGHLY RECOGNISED FOR YOUR DEVOTION, SUPPORT, LOVE AND GENEROUS CONTRIBUTION TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF ADA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL”.

The award was received on behalf of Miss Webb by Dr Gabriel Ofoe Canacoo, chairman of the ‘Webb of Excellence Welfare Fund’, who remarked that “it is instructive that in the 60-year history of the school, only one former tutor has thought it fit to help the students by way of establishing a scholarship scheme”.

When the news was broken to Miss Webb in St John’s, Newfoundland, in a telephone conversation a day later, she remarked: “What a surprise, what a surprise. I never, for a moment, thought my very humble contribution will touch so many lives and bring me such massive recognition.

“I am totally delighted to be remembered and I accept with gratitude this honour from the Ada Senior High School. It is my pleasure, indeed. “I dedicate the award to the many people, who have supported me, through cash and kind, to keep this dream going. They are the real heroes and heroines”.

Miss Webb, who was a CUSO (Canadian University Services Overseas) volunteer, taught business subjects at the then Ada Secondary School between 1968 and 1970. She played a pioneering role in the establishment of the Business Department of the school.

Winners of Webb Awards

To date, some six female students have benefited from the Webb of Excellence Awards. They are: Miss Stella Akpanglo, winner of maiden award in 2016, Charity Asigbey Kpelemeh, winner of the 2nd awards and Emelia Korlekuor Addowah, winner of the 3rd awards.

From 2019, the awards moved into the tertiary sector and the first two girls to benefit are: Juliet Nuerkie Annang and Nyemignor Korkor Okai, who will soon enter their third year at the University of Ghana where they are pursuing a course in Biological Science.

And the most recent winner of the award is Esther Pamela Teiko Partey, who is entering her 2nd Year at the University of Cape Coast where she is pursuing a course in Pharmacy.
