“I OWE the Webb of Excellence Welfare Fund and its founder, Madam Eleanor Louise Webb, a big debt of gratitude. Let me state unequivocally that but for your immense financial assistance, I would have missed tertiary education.”
These were the very touching words of Miss Juliet Nuerki Annang, when she and her colleague, Miss Nyemignor Korkor Okai (recipients of our maiden Tertiary Support Scheme) were celebrated at a special luncheon organized by the Fund on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at the SSNIT Guest House in Accra.
It will be recalled that the two ladies performed exceptionally well in their 4-year course in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology at the University of Ghana, Legon. Juliet obtained a First Class while Nyemignor had a Second Class Upper.
On the verge of tears, Juliet recalled that long before she completed Senior High School (SHS), she decided to look for a job on completion of SHS, given the dire financial difficulties at home.
She explained that even though her father, a retired carpenter, and her mother, a petty trader, were willing to push her as far as they could, they simply did not have the financial muscle to take her through tertiary education.
“Fortunately, I found a job as a Cook soon after finishing SHS so when the results of the 2019 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) were released, I did not even bother to check how I fared.
“When the Universities opened in September 2019, I stayed at home for over ONE MONTH before the pleasant news came through that I was one of two persons who had been offered financial support by the Webb of Excellence Scheme for tertiary education. I was in a dreamland. And this opportunity dramatically changed my destiny.
“My family’s immediate reaction was to go in for a loan to secure a place for me at Legon while we awaited the fine details of the support from Webb of Excellence.
“Today, as I reminiscent over all that I went through, I cannot thank Webb of Excellence enough for making me who I am today. I, therefore, wholeheartedly, dedicate my award to Miss Eleanor Webb. She truly deserves it.
“Madam, your support for me has taught me many valuable lessons in life and I pray that one day, I would also be in the position to extend a helping hand to brilliant-but-needy people in society.”
On her part, Nyemignor Okai was also full of praise for the Board of Administrators of the Fund and Miss Webb, in particular, for showing so much love to female students of Ada Senior High – a school she had the opportunity to introduce shorthand and typing to – some 54 years ago.
“A true mother that you are, you bent over backwards to institute a Tertiary Support Scheme which will, for generations, provide financial support for brilliant female students. This is a noble act of selflessness and I salute you profusely. Your trust and belief in excellence is awesome.
“Wherever I go in life, I will display that banner of love you have instilled in me so everyone will know that the world will be a better place if people lend a helping hand here and there. May Webb of Excellence grow from strength to strength”.
The two graduands were honoured with special plaques and a cheque for Ghc1,000 (One Thousand Cedis) each.
The citation read:
“YOU were one of two recipients of the maiden Tertiary Support Scheme of the Webb of Excellence Welfare Fund which we launched at the Ada Senior High School in 2019.
“You entered the University of Ghana full of promise and by dint of hard work, determination, dedication and discipline, you graduated with flying colours in January 2024.
“Webb of Excellence salutes you not only for justifying the trust and confidence we reposed in you but, more importantly, for impacting your generation as well as your alma mater positively through your sense of diligence as well as your unwavering commitment to your studies.
“We are truly proud of you…..Ayekoo”.
The two ladies are scheduled to complete their National Service in September, this year, after which they plan to pursue their Masters.
Webb of Excellence wishes them all the best in their future endeavours.
