Ms. Eleanor Louise Webb

Founder

the brain behind the institution of the WEBB OF EXCELLENCE AWARDS, was a CUSO (Canadian University Services Overseas) volunteer and taught business subjects at Ada Secondary School, Ghana between 1968 and 1970. She played a pioneering role in the establishment of the Business Department of Ada Secondary School.
The legacy of teaching practical subjects such as typing, shorthand and general business subjects propelled many of her students to obtain excellent employment.

Her CUSO activities also took her to Botswana (1973-74) South Sudan (1974-75) and Malawi. She also worked at the International Office of the Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada – preparing and implementing educational projects in various countries such as Mozambique, Cambodia, Vietnam and Malawi.
In 2015, her late Aunt Mary left her $3000 – so she conducted research into the possibility of setting up a scholarship fund for girls in Ada Secondary School. She contacted some her former students of in Ghana (whom she had kept in touch with over the years) to see if it was feasible. The following individuals form the Executive Committee in Ghana comprising of former students of mine – Gabriel Canacoo (1971 Year Group), Emmanuel Amoako (1969 Year Group), Sammy Tetteh (1970 Year Group) plus Dr. Edward Soga – an old boy of Adisadel College whom she had met at the International Students Centre at University of Toronto (while he was studying dentistry in 1970). These individuals agreed to form the ‘Webb of Excellence’ Executive Committee and are invaluable in the success of this scholarship.
A criterion was formulated to offer girls equal opportunity in both education and future employment. It was agreed that a yearly scholarship by offered to individual girls from the Ada region with outstanding academic standing. At this point, three female students have benefitted from this scholarship.
Since the launch of the award, it had received tremendous support from many individual Canadian citizens as well as the Atlantic Mission Society & The Trustees of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church of St. John's to whom we are eternally grateful.

It is Miss Webb’s hope that ‘The Webb of Excellence Fund’ will continue to offer financial assistance to
